Wiggins has been on an indefinite leave of absence since Feb. 14. The Warriors and Wiggins have prioritized privacy during this time, only referring to Wiggins' departure as the result of a personal family matter. Last week, coach Steve Kerr said Wiggins has been working out independently while he's been away, and the team has "hope" he may return before the season's end. Wiggins, 28, was born and raised in Ontario, Canada.
On Saturday, Wiggin's longtime girlfriend Mychal Johnson posted an Instagram story asking for recommendations for a "curly hair specialist" in the Bay Area. Some optimistic Warriors fans online have taken this as confirmation the family has returned, or plans on returning very shortly.
The post coincides with a report from KRON sports director Jason Dumas on Friday. "I’ve been told that Andrew Wiggins is back in the Bay Area," Dumas posted on Twitter. "He had spent most of the recent weeks out of town."
Getting Wiggins back soon would be a crucial shot-in-the-arm for the Warriors. Golden State has four games left in the regular season, including Sunday's matchup against the Nuggets. Going into the game, the NBA's official site notes "it's mathematically possible for the Warriors to finish anywhere from fourth place to 10th in the West."
While the team has been tight-lipped about Wiggins' personal life, online rumors have become so vicious that teammate Draymond Green took to his podcast to clear things up. "You don't know what someone is dealing with," Green said. "... What if that's not what the person is dealing with? Stop it."
An anonymous teammate told The Athletic in mid-March that Wiggins is "dealing with ... some real (expletive)."
